Industry and Transportation in Stuttgart

The city is an important rail junction. Stuttgart also has an inland port at Stuttgart Hedelfingen on the River Neckar and an international airport. The city is the centre of the largest industrial zone in southwestern Germany. Stuttgart hosts numerous trade fairs and congresses. The important industries include electrical engineering and motor vehicle and machine construction. Such products as precision instruments (cameras, optical equipment), chemicals, textiles, clothing, beer, luxury wooden and leather goods, shoes, musical instruments, and paper are also manufactured here. Stuttgart has many printing works and more than 200 publishing houses. The city is also famous for the wine produced here (wine has been produced in the area since the 1600s). One of the things peculiar about Stuttgart is the Zahnradbahn (a rack railway). It operates from Marienplatz to the Degerloch district. It is the only urban rack railway in the country. The Standseilbahn Stuttgart (a funicular railway) operates in the Heslach district.
