Architecture of Stuttgart

When visiting Stuttgart one can note the peculiar combination of various architectural styles. It is so partly because many buildings were constructed at different times. During World War II the city centre was severely damaged by air raids. Many historic buildings were reconstructed. Some new ones emerged, representing modern architecture. Historic buildings of Stuttgart include the old castle (13th century; rebuilt in 1553 - 1578); the new palace (1746 - 1807); the Rosenstein Palace (1824 - 1829); the Gothic St. Leonard's Church (1463 - 1474); and the Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church), a 12th-century Romanesque basilica (completed in the Gothic style, 1436 - 1495). The Solitude Palace (1763 - 1767) and the Hohenheim Palace (1768 - 1785) are also examples of historic buildings. Modern architecture is represented by the Weissenhof Estate (1927), the town hall (1954 - 1956), the 193-metre television tower (1955) and Stuttgarter Liederhall (1954 - 1956).
