Origin of the city

Stuttgart was founded circa 950 by Duke Liudolf of Swabia who was one of the sons of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I the Great. Before that there were prehistoric settlements and a Roman fort in the area of Bad Cannstatt. Stuttgart was originally used for horse breeding. In about 1300 it became the residence of the Counts of Württemberg.
